Education
Career
His early career was as a secondary teacher, then Head Teacher of Mathematics.
In 1986 he joined the NSW Statutory Board Directorate (the forerunner of the Board of Studies) as Leader, Research Services Section. Over the next 23 years he held a number of increasingly senior positions at the Board of Studies in the areas of Assessment and ICT.
From December 2002 until his retirement in August 2009 Dr John Bennett was Chief Executive of the Office of the Board of Studies NSW.
Following his retirement he became an Adjunct Professor in the School of Education at the University of New South Wales, a member of the NESA Standards Committee, the Chair of a large Independent School, a member of the Council of an Early Learning Centre, a member of an Expert Advisory Group for the Australian Institute of Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL), and a member of Council of an Anglican Parish.

Honours
He was the 2009 recipient of the Australian College of Educators Wyndham Medal for ‘Outstanding contribution to the education of young people in NSW’. Read more.
He was made a Fellow of the Australian College of Educators in 2011.
John was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) in the 2021 Queen’s Birthday Honours for significant services to Education. Read more.
